    GAVIK

Hello, and thanks for stopping by lumenowl!

This gorgeously stylish IKEA lamp (introduced in the Spring of 2012 and now long discontinued), designed by in-house creative Helena Svensson is an elegantly minimalist light source, suitable for practically anywhere. Constructed from dense, frosted white glass in two separate sections, the lamp gently 'slots' together to create a traditional table lamp shape. The base is in excellent vintage condition, with only the most minor of fleabites to the shade section.

Not that it needs much of an introduction to anyone in either hemisphere, IKEA is a Swedish founded, Dutch multinational conglomerate that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances and home accessories, among other useful goods and occasionally home services. Founded in Sweden in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA has been the world's largest furniture retailer since 2008. The brand used by the group is an acronym that consists of the founder's initials (Ingvar Kamprad), and those of Elmtaryd, the family farm where he was born, and the nearby village Agunnaryd (his hometown in Småland, southern Sweden). The group is known for its modernist designs for various types of appliances and furniture, and its interior design work is often associated with an eco-friendly simplicity. In addition, the firm is known for its attention to cost control, operational details, and continuous product development that has allowed IKEA to lower its prices by an average of two to three percent.

When Helena Svensson designed GAVIK table lamp she had decided on three things: to bring the qualities of glass to a new level; to create a lamp that could also be a sculpture; and to ensure that it would create beautiful effects when lit. Glass is beautiful in its own right, thought Helena, which is why she wanted to make the most of glass as a material and create an integrated design where the foot of the lamp continues up and folds over itself to become a lamp shade. The transparent glass would then create a layer-on-layer effect causing the light to refract when it shines through the double glass. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to produce the lamp in one continuous piece, but because the lamp’s foot is also made of glass, the effect is the same when the light shines through. The GAVIK lamp became like a sculpture in its own right and can be placed here, there and everywhere to bring atmosphere to a room.

GAVIK has had all existing electrical components removed and replaced with more up to date variants. In place of the original (and ageing) plastic E14 lamp holder now sits a new nickel version, maintaining its compatibility with lightbulbs in the UK, Europe and the US. GAVIK has been rewired with luxurious quality bark coloured linen and rayon covered cable in a fantastic zig-zag pattern, featuring a high quality white inline rocker switch 20cm from the lamp base (with another 1m from the switch to the matching black UK 3-pin plug). The metal lamp holder is earthed using three-core cable, and the lamp has been thoroughly PAT tested and approved (with a sticker affixed near the plug to show the PASS status). Components comprise of a British-made and certified lamp holder and plug, and Italian-made cable and switch, which have passed or exceeded relevant CE and EU electrical integrity tests.

Use a lower colour temperature bulb (1800-2200K, see picture #3) to create a golden, soft light, or a higher temperature (2700-4000K) for a crisper, pure white light.

GAVIK stands at 21cm tall, and is 18cm in depth and width. It weighs in at just over 1.5KG.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can your lamps be customised for my country?

Yes, absolutely! I ship worldwide, and I've already serviced many international orders. My lamps are fitted with either E14/SES or E27/ES lamp holders (which are usable with bulbs sold all over the world) and UK 3-pin plugs, but these can be swapped out to US E26/E12 Candelabra fittings on request for a small additional fee. A plug corresponding to your country will be added, and, if necessary, an inline on/off switch.

Once converted, I will then test the lamps on a transformer and re-certify via an additional PAT test.

Please simply choose the appropriate option from the "Country" dropdown menu at the top of each listing to have the lamp customised.

    Are your lamps safe?

Extremely! Each of my lamps is painstakingly assembled (I have a long history of competency with electrical wiring), and subsequently certified. I am PAT qualified and accredited. Moreover, all of my metal lamps use 3-core cable to ensure a proper, safe earthing conduit.

Please feel free to message me with any other questions.

Can you make custom lamps? What if I provided you with a vase or bottle?

One of the biggest joys of this whole endeavour so far for me has been problem solving each individual lamp I make.

If you've got a vase, bottle (or other item!) lying around you'd like to see turned into a lamp, please do get in touch with me! I'd be more than happy to discuss with you your ideas and how we could best achieve them.

Where did the names of your lamps come from?

All the lamps I make (either individual or a series) originally were named after all the dog siblings I've had in the family over the years, or pups I've known over the years. As my collection has grown, I've started to use character names from my favourite films and TV shows.

What happens if my order arrives damaged or broken?

I'm extremely conscientious about packaging. In the unlikely event your order is damaged in transit and arrives to you broken, please immediately photograph both the packaging and the lamp istelf. Please then forward the images within 24 hours to tom@lumenowl.co.uk, and I will then assess and resolve the situation for you.

Can you repair or rewire an old lamp I have?

Yes, absolutely! I've already done this a couple of times. I can remove aged lamp holders, wiring and switches and replace with brand new variants. Once complete, I will exhaustively test and certify via a PAT test.

Please drop me a message if you have any questions about this service, or would like a quote.
