    WATERCOLOUR

Hello, and thanks for stopping by lumenowl!

    INTRO:

This beautiful Jersey Pottery lamp base has been throughly cleaned, restored, rewired and brought into the 21st century. Presented in a trumpet-shaped, fluted form with hand-painted, freeform watercolour decorations, this charming little lamp would make a fantastic feature piece on a small cupboard or bedside table.

    ---------------

    A BIT OF HISTORY:

Jersey Pottery was founded in 1946 by brothers Charles and Edward Potter, who saw an opportunity to manufacture and export “British” pottery following a law introduced during WWII which banned the production of decorative ware in the UK but did not apply to Jersey. Pottery production had ceased in Jersey in the 1880s when the clay from local quarries in St. Lawrence was exported in large quantities to Cornwall. The first factory was established on the site of a former ship-building yard close to the sea in Gorey Village.

A true family business, Jersey Pottery was purchased in 1954 by Clive and Jessie Jones who, with the help of their daughter Carol, set out to transform the business by getting back to basics of making desirable, high quality, fashionable ceramics but for a different market. The business was still exporting ceramics but a decision was taken to target a new customer base, the growing numbers of tourists holidaying in Jersey. Jersey Pottery took the innovative decision to allow visitors into the factory in the hope they would purchase a souvenir of their trip to Jersey.

Colin Jones and Carol Garton managed the business through the heady days of tourism in the 1960's through to the 1990's. Colin, father of the present day owners, left school and went to train in Stoke-on-Trent, taking classes in the technical and managerial aspects of the ceramic industry.

Into the 2000's, the business was faced with a disappearing customer base and needed to reinvent itself. A decision was made to return to its origins and recommence a business exporting to trade customers. Export-ware needed to compete on the world stage and hand-made ceramics were expensive to produce, especially in Jersey. A decision was made to focus on high quality porcelain, bone china, earthenware and stoneware decorated with decals. While manufacturing of the new and old ranges continued in Gorey, Jersey Pottery also starting manufacturing outside Jersey and working with a range of external artists and illustrators commissioned to work alongside the in-house design team.

Jersey Pottery attended trade shows around Europe and steadily the export business started to grow again with Jersey Pottery ceramics now being stocked by hundreds of retailers in over 30 countries around the world. In 2012, Jersey Pottery’s management, design, marketing and finance teams moved to a new home at 8 Beresford Street, St Helier, a restored former Victorian gentleman’s club. The overall business is now bigger than any time in its history, employing over 150 people.

    CONDITION:

The base is in flawless vintage condition. There are no chips, cracks, restorations or anything that would immediately date the piece. The glossy decoration is still as rich and vivid as the day it was fired.

    ---------------

    THE TECHNICAL BIT:

WATERCOLOUR has had all existing electrical components removed, and now features a new, high quality, machine milled E27/ES screw brass lamp holder, extended slightly from the base to ensure maximum visibility once a lampshade is added.

The base has been rewired with fabulous transparent 3-core cable, featuring a high quality white inline rocker switch 20cm from the lamp base (and a further 1m to the matching white UK 3-pin plug). The metal lamp holder is earthed, and WATERCOLOUR has been thoroughly PAT tested and approved (with a sticker affixed near the plug to show the PASS status). Components comprise of a British-made and certified lamp holder, plug, cable and an Italian-made switch, which has passed or exceeded relevant CE and EU electrical integrity tests.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can your lamps be customised for my country?

Yes, absolutely! I ship worldwide, and I've already serviced many international orders. My lamps are fitted with either E14/SES or E27/ES lamp holders (which are usable with bulbs sold all over the world) and UK 3-pin plugs, but these can be swapped out to US E26/E12 Candelabra fittings on request for a small additional fee. A plug corresponding to your country will be added, and, if necessary, an inline on/off switch.

    https://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/

Once converted, I will then test the lamps on a transformer and re-certify via an additional PAT test.

Please simply choose the appropriate option from the "Country" dropdown menu at the top of each listing to have the lamp customised.

    Are your lamps safe?

Extremely! Each of my lamps is painstakingly assembled (I have a long history of competency with electrical wiring), and subsequently certified. I am PAT qualified and accredited. Moreover, all of my metal lamps use 3-core cable to ensure a proper, safe earthing conduit.

Please feel free to message me with any other questions.

Can you make custom lamps? What if I provided you with a vase or bottle?

One of the biggest joys of this whole endeavour so far for me has been problem solving each individual lamp I make.

If you've got a vase, bottle (or other item!) lying around you'd like to see turned into a lamp, please do get in touch with me! I'd be more than happy to discuss with you your ideas and how we could best achieve them.

Where did the names of your lamps come from?

All the lamps I make (either individual or a series) originally were named after all the dog siblings I've had in the family over the years, or pups I've known over the years. As my collection has grown, I've started to use character names from my favourite films and TV shows.

What happens if my order arrives damaged or broken?

I'm extremely conscientious about packaging. In the unlikely event your order is damaged in transit and arrives to you broken, please immediately photograph both the packaging and the lamp istelf. Please then forward the images within 24 hours to tom@lumenowl.co.uk, and I will then assess and resolve the situation for you.

Can you repair or rewire an old lamp I have?

Yes, absolutely! I've already done this a couple of times. I can remove aged lamp holders, wiring and switches and replace with brand new variants. Once complete, I will exhaustively test and certify via a PAT test.

Please drop me a message if you have any questions about this service, or would like a quote.
