    SHEERLITE (Barrel)

Hello, and thanks for stopping by Lumen Owl!

This amazing little statement lamp has been totally reconditioned from a gorgeous Royal Doulton 'Sheerlite' barrel-shaped lamp base. Finished in a luxurious and glossy honey mustard glaze, this lamp immediately pulls focus wherever it is placed. The base is fabricated from the same dense and *extremely* heavy porcelain used in sinks and bathroom installations. So, no chips here!

In 1815, John Doulton took the ultimate gamble. He invested his life savings, £100, in a small London pottery operation. Call it luck, wisdom or business acumen, but from a maker of storage jars and ceramic sewage pipes grew a leader in design-driven, technically innovative manufacturer of fine tableware. Over the course of 200 years, Doulton's focus on bringing premium quality and exceptional design to the table has been a resounding success, earning them two Royal Warrants and the continuing love of fans the world over.

Much in the same way the Robert Jefferson era breathed new life into and brought an entirely new consumer base to the Poole Pottery, Royal Doulton's reputation for extremely high quality but admittedly quite stuffy and parochial ceramics was shattered (as it were) by a series of on-trend decorative homewares released around the late 1960's. Among them, the SHEERLITE lamp series, constructed as a stylish, minimalist pagoda from extremely heavy porcelain. The lamps were a huge hit, and were produced in many permutations, ranging from those small enough to fit even the most compact bedside table, all the way to versions that could almost be referred to as standard lamps. The extreme quality and density of Royal Doulton's porcelain mean those that have survived the ravages of time have done so looking practically as good as the day there were fired.

A full, fascinating history of Royal Doulton can be found here:

The base has been extensively cleaned, and is in excellent condition. The stunning, glossy yellow glaze absolutely pops whether illuminated by natural or artificial light.

SHEERLITE has had all existing electrical components removed, and features a new, standard UK B22 bayonet brass lamp holder and associated brass fitments. The holder is switched to facilitate easy on/off operation, and is of the new generation 'safer' variety, meaning if a bulb is not present or is removed, the fitting will automatically toggle and lock to the ‘off’ position so no current is transmissible. SHEERLITE has been rewired with luxurious quality bark coloured linen and rayon covered cable in a fantastic zig-zag pattern. An internal cable locking mechanism keeps the flex sturdily in place. The metal lamp holder is earthed using three-core cable, and SHEERLITE has been thoroughly PAT tested and approved (with a sticker affixed near the plug to show the PASS status). Components comprise of a British-made and certified lamp holder and plug, and Italian-made cable, which has passed or exceeded relevant CE and EU electrical integrity tests. Finally, the base has been re-felted to ensure smooth contact with soft furnishings.

SHEERLITE stands at 21cm tall (base to the tip of the lamp holder), and the widest part of the base measures 9.5cm in diameter. He weighs in at just over 2KG! Approx. 1m of cable is provided between the lamp base and the UK 3-pin plug.

SHEERLITE'S impressive, retro design means it would be best paired with a drum shade shade around the 20-25cm mark.

    INTERNATIONAL VERSIONS:

Whilst Lumen Owl lamps are currently wired for the UK market, I am more than happy to adapt for use in other countries. The existing B22 lamp holder can be swapped out for either a brass EU E27 or US E26 version, with the necessary cable alterations and inline rocker switch added to facilitate operation. I can also fit a plug socket relevant to the destination country. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions or would like a quote regarding this process and the associated shipping costs.

Every item is professionally wrapped, packaged and sent via trackable post or courier.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can your lamps be customised for my country?

Yes, absolutely! I ship worldwide, and I've already serviced many international orders. My lamps are fitted with either E14/SES or E27/ES lamp holders (which are usable with bulbs sold all over the world) and UK 3-pin plugs, but these can be swapped out to US E26/E12 Candelabra fittings on request for a small additional fee. A plug corresponding to your country will be added, and, if necessary, an inline on/off switch.

    https://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/

Once converted, I will then test the lamps on a transformer and re-certify via an additional PAT test.

Please simply choose the appropriate option from the "Country" dropdown menu at the top of each listing to have the lamp customised.

    Are your lamps safe?

Extremely! Each of my lamps is painstakingly assembled (I have a long history of competency with electrical wiring), and subsequently certified. I am PAT qualified and accredited. Moreover, all of my metal lamps use 3-core cable to ensure a proper, safe earthing conduit.

Please feel free to message me with any other questions.

Can you make custom lamps? What if I provided you with a vase or bottle?

One of the biggest joys of this whole endeavour so far for me has been problem solving each individual lamp I make.

If you've got a vase, bottle (or other item!) lying around you'd like to see turned into a lamp, please do get in touch with me! I'd be more than happy to discuss with you your ideas and how we could best achieve them.

Where did the names of your lamps come from?

All the lamps I make (either individual or a series) originally were named after all the dog siblings I've had in the family over the years, or pups I've known over the years. As my collection has grown, I've started to use character names from my favourite films and TV shows.

What happens if my order arrives damaged or broken?

I'm extremely conscientious about packaging. In the unlikely event your order is damaged in transit and arrives to you broken, please immediately photograph both the packaging and the lamp istelf. Please then forward the images within 24 hours to tom@lumenowl.co.uk, and I will then assess and resolve the situation for you.

Can you repair or rewire an old lamp I have?

Yes, absolutely! I've already done this a couple of times. I can remove aged lamp holders, wiring and switches and replace with brand new variants. Once complete, I will exhaustively test and certify via a PAT test.

Please drop me a message if you have any questions about this service, or would like a quote.
